Astronauts Must Program Robots
نویسنده
چکیده
The traditional model for human-robot interaction is at the level of user-interface. For example, given a robot structure (say Robonaut a relatively complex many DOF humantorso style robot) how should the robot be commanded by the human? We propose that for planetary exploration on the scale of Martian or Lunar habitation, a fixed robot/architecture will not be versatile enough for the variety of known and unexpected events. The astronauts will need to construct the tools to complete tasks from a rich set of modules. There needs to be new programming paradigms that suits the rapid resource constrained contingencies an

“Progress Towards Task-Level Collaboration Between Astronauts and Their Robotic Assistants”
In the future, NASA envisions robotic assistants seamlessly interacting with astronauts. These robots must be capable of understanding abstract tasks, and must also reliably execute the tasks. We make progress towards these goals by firstly developing a task-level programming language, called RMPL, that robots can directly interpret and understand. Secondly, we develop a hybrid executive that c...

When humans return to the moon, Astronauts will be accompanied by robotic helpers. Enabling robots to safely operate near astronauts on the lunar surface has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency of crew surface operations. Safely operating robots in close proximity to astronauts on the lunar surface requires reactive obstacle avoidance capabilities not available on existing pla...

The Northrop Grumman Space Technology (NGST) Automated Walking Inspection and Maintenance Robot (AWIMR) project was one of many NASA Technology Initiatives for the Exploration Initiative, NASA’s program for return to the Moon and Mars. AWIMR was intended to assist astronauts by moving about on the exterior of a crewed space vehicle, performing inspection and other tasks which might assist astro...
متن کاملA Virtual Rover Interface for Collaborative Human-Robot Exploration Teams
Future planetary exploration missions will employ teams of rovers as astronaut assistants and independent scouts. Individual and cooperative tasks must be accurately modeled. Mission controllers and astronauts must maintain situational awareness through global and local perspectives of the exploration team members and their environment. This paper describes the development and integration of a ...

One of the great challenges of putting humanoid robots into space is developing cognitive capabilities for the robots with an interface that allows human astronauts to collaborate with the robots as naturally and efficiently as they would with other astronauts. In this joint effort with NASA and the entire Robonaut team we are integrating natural language and gesture understanding, spatial reas...
